It all too easy to be blinded by the low prices of budget multifunction printers and while these deals can look good on paper, the reality the running costs are so high that is better to spend a little bit more for something that cheaper to run on printer cartridges. The Epson Stylus SX200 is a cheap multifunction printer and its genuine Epson ink cartridges cost almost as much as the printer itself. However the Epson SX200 ink cartridges consist of four individual ink tanks which don’t contain a print head and this means there are compatible cartridges available for 50% less than the cost of the genuine ones and this makes the SX200 a very attractive prospect. In terms of functions the SX200 offers a great range from scanning, copying and direct printing from a memory card or digital camera thanks to the built in memory card reader and PictBridge connection. All of these features of performs with minimum fuss and to a good standard and all of which are easily accessible. Printing is where the SX200 performs best, its high print resolution helps it produce great quality photo prints as well as sharp text documents. The biggest weakness of the SX200 is its printing speed, the official spec sheet says that its capable of 34ppm (pages per minute) but this may be a typo as the best the SX200 is capable of in standard quality mode is 4ppm. Built quality is good and everything feels well screwed together, although operating noise level are a little higher than some of it competitors. Overall a great value for money multifunction inkjet printer.
